Are Superhero Movies Finally Selling Superhero Comics To The Mainstream?

Earlier in the summer Iron Man spiked comic book and trade paperback sales for the character, and now it looks like The Dark Knight is doing the same for Batman — albeit for the “established classics.” Sales for the current monthly series have yet to be revealed, but I’d be willing to bet that they go up a bit just from people wandering into stores and picking up an issue here and there for curiosity’s sake. Then those same people will finish the issue, say “wtf? I don’t get it,” and pick up The Long Halloween or whatever instead.
Anyways, a quick look at Amazon today reveals the following rankings:
Dark Knight Returns #17
Killing Joke HC #20
Year One #30
And we’ve already seen what’s happening with Watchmen.

Am I the only person who kind of hated The Long Halloween? All the stupid Godfather references/stolen lines, the predictability of the ending…ugh. I still don’t get how Jeph Loeb got to be this popular.

I’m a firm believer that his true talent is picking great artists to work with who are so good you can look past his clumsy writing — i.e. “Hush.”

I didn’t really like the Killing Joke. I’m guessing it just doesn’t really stand the test of time. I’m not saying it was horrible, it was just meh for me.

Loeb writes mediocre comics highly derivative of successful movies and TV shows- which is why he’s so popular with TV and movie types(ie working in Hollywood). That big mainstream audience comics have being trying for reacts best to “crossover” material- which is why stuff like LOVE AND ROCKETS sits on the shelves while anything tied into a movie will move.(Although I was pleasantly suprised to see PBS recently do a piece on Jeff Smith, who’s crossing over simply on the merits of the work itself- gives my cynical self hope…)

I noticed a local B Dalton had a big Batman endcap with plenty of these GNs as well as more kid friendly stuff as well. I’m sure retailers are taking advantage of the current buzz
