Well I scanned most of my fave sites just now looking at what was announced. I heard a pretty big “meh!” from my inner child. Marvel and DC panels sounded like the same old stuff – my favorite overzealous quote from Greg Pak, a writer who has yet to display to me that he can ‘bring it,’ when talking about a new War Machine comic: “The book’s going to be hard, period, core, period.” Marvel should put that at the top of all of Pak’s books. Period.
Some of the more interesting things:
- CBR has a boat (very, very tastefully decorated) and they are interviewing comic people on it…wow just like Cannes but for nerds. I love it.
- Stan Lee meets Grant Morrisson for the first time – while touching and neat, Grant works for DC mostly and his DC work is a bit more cool outside of the Stan Lee created X-Men run he worked on (Marvel Boy and Skrull Kill Krew were the other 2 cool things Grant made at Marvel)
- Wolverine shows up and everyone pee’s their pants.
- The rest sounded more like cool MOVIE news instead of comics – Darren Aronofsky on a ROBOCOP movie???!!! I don’t know if that is the greatest thing ever or the weirdest thing ever…either way that will be one freaking super-tracked movie and so will the TRON 2 movie. Red Sonja? OK whatever. The Torchwood dude as Steve Rogers, maybe. New Punisher War Zone movie poster…blah blah blah I don’t need to smell that hall to see those. Ooh Larry Hama has a cameo in the G.I. Joe movie and it has a bigger budget than Transformers 1.
I loved the title to Heidi’s post – because I thought it meant something else – but nonetheless when Kim Khardasian (sic) and her ass is at Comic-Con I think that something is wrong. It just seems like how the hot girl in grade school tricked me (the class nerd) out of my lunch money everyday.
I’m sure the main stuff will happen on the weekend. Thursday is usually the warm-up day.
If you saw something I missed that was cool please post it in the comments.

Hey Lucas, what are the chances I could convince you to grab me one of those Darwyn Cooke Sketchbooks that he’s selling out there? I live in Philly and we never get nice exclusives like that…
Pete – Lucas is stuck in Hong Kong, so I’m guessing he’s not gonna be able to get you a sketchbook. However, my wife and I should be there tomorrow and Sunday (I’m actually working for CBR this weekend, hence Lucas filling in AMAZONGLY here at KFR), and I’ll see what I can do. No promises, though – it’s easy to have your head go empty when you step onto the CCI floor.
Hi Pete – yeah I am just reporting on what I’m seeing from the web. And to be honest, I was there last year, and I learned about more stuff when I got back to my hotel room and hit the interwebs. Like Stephen is doing with CBR right now. And on a swanky yacht no less!
I still remember being on the other side of the football stadium last year, when Robert Downey Jr. was at the Marvel booth unveiling the Mark 1 armor – what the hell? I was there and I didn’t even get to see it. I was shocked when I saw it online and it said the time of unveiling.
Like Stephen said – your head does empty as soon as you hit the main floor, and also why does each row have a distinctive smell? I didn’t tell people to meet me at a row number, I tell them to meet me at the row that smells like “chicken salad” or “extreme nacho odor” or “hardcore farts” but that last one usually gets them lost because most of the rows smell like that on the weekend.
Stephen! Dude, if you remember, and you’re willing to grab one of those Darwyn Cooke Sketchbooks, I’d be grateful beyond grateful. I’ll get you through PayPal or money order (if you don’t want to deal with PayPal fees, and who the hell does?). I’ve been in love with Darwyn Cooke’s work since that Batman: Ego book came out, and it was a hell of a bummer to find out that there was gonna be an awesome book like this, exclusively 3000 miles away.
So, yeah. If you’d be willing to do that for an almost stranger (blog talkbacks count for a little something, here in the future), that’d be really awesome. You can read my email address when I post, right? Send me an email if you can get that book and we can iron out the details. And thanks for the heads-up on that.
Also, I haven’t forgotten that Dark Knight bet. Halloween is a long way off, and I’m sure we’re at least 1/4 of the way to a billion…
Got the sketchbook – holy cow, it’s nice! But for $40, it better be! I’ll contact you off-site so we can arrange shipping and payment and what not.
