“Film Crew” DVDs Now on Hulu

A few years back, before Mike Nelson launched RiffTrax and before MST3K creator Joel Hodgson started Cinematic Titanic, the “second” MST3K crew — Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett — reunited as the Film Crew. The Film Crew was essentially MST3K 2.0, featuring MST3K-style riffing on awful movies in straight-to-DVD episodes. But the discs were held in limbo for a long time, as former producer and owner of all things MST3K, Jim Mallon, apparently forced Rhino, then holder of the show’s license and distributor of the Film Crew discs, to not release the new DVDs, claiming they were too similar to MST3K. Last year, Shout Factory thankfully picked up the Film Crew discs — all hysterical, and funnier than any RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic I’ve seen — and released them all.
While the Film Crew project is apparently over, as RiffTrax seems to be doing fine, you can now watch them for free at Hulu.com. My personal favorite: Hollywood After Dark, featuring a young Rue McLanahan, very not-sexy stripping, and several interchangeable greasy dudes.
