The Great LCD Blowout Of 2008 Is Coming

Thinking about getting a new LCD TV or monitor this month? You may want to think againa nd wait just a few more months, according to the New York Times.
One of the year’s hottest seasons for buying new LCD TVs and desktop monitors is around the corner, mid-August through September, and analysts are nervous that people may not buy as many units as expected, which will send prices lower.
“Our recent channel checks show that the industry pendulum has swung into a ‘buyer’s market’ where customers are holding back orders,” said Jeffrey Su, an analyst at investment banking firm Merrill Lynch, in a recent report.
One problem facing the industry is a supply gut.
“Over-shipment of large-area LCD panels in (the second quarter) due to an overly optimistic outlook for 2008 was the main factor contributing to the rapid and significant panel price reductions seen in the panel supply chain beginning in June,” said DisplaySearch, in a report issued Monday.
I’ve been in the market for a new TV for a while, but never seem to be able to jump on the good deals when they come along. Here’s hoping that this winter I can finally get rid of my faux-HD tube and have a nice, sleek flat panel sitting in the living room to watch my Charlie Brown holiday specials on.

This seems like a bit of a “DUH” story. Still, I’m holding my breath same as you Stephen. I helped a friend snag a 32″ Samsung on sale at Sears for $500 and haven’t seen a deal like it since.
Is it just me or do TV manufacturers come out with a new flat screen model every other week? And yet the prices never seem to go down. I hope things change for the better after the digital switch in February. My red gun is going out on the CRT!

I hear what you’re saying, Jon, and I share your pain. I had a shot at a nice LCD for about $350 4-5 months ago and passed. I regretted it a week later. Hopefully this winter’ll see some serious cuts, ’cause that 36″ tube isn’t getting any less square, but all mt shows certainly are.

I dunno, I feel with lots of tech stuff - pc parts, tvs, hell vid games, there’s always that price drop around the corner. I’m happy to soon buy a 42 inch Samsung for around $800-under $1000. hdtvs used to cost a fortune.
