Haha. Eh, I still think there’s something to be said for “Clerks,” and, to that extent, “Mallrats” is maybe kind of forgivable…? (although I haven’t seen either of those movies since they came out, what, like 15 years ago?)
Then “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma” were interesting and I thought showed that he was at least making an effort to work towards something. But yeah, he just doesn’t seem to have learned much about making movies over the course of his career, and I’m guessing what he’s made hasn’t aged too well.
Will the imminent 90s nostalgia craze resurrect his career, though?
Kevin Smith, Public Speaker: Fucking hilarious and engaging.
Kevin Smith, Director: meh.
Kevin Smith is more famous than his movies. I can listen to him tell stories for hours but his movies are increasingly more questionable. I’m hoping Zac And Miri Make A Porno changes that since he’s got Seth Rogen.
kevin smith movies are fine. haven’t seen chasing amy or all of jersey girl but his body of work is not significantly better or worse than many other directors especially for a comedy aimed director. and i’m sure zac & miri will be more than entertaining enough.
Now, it’s my understanding that there is a school of thinking out there — mostly from folks who saw this film as kids, which I completely understand — that this is a good movie. And let it be known that I’m a Spielberg appreciator; even an apologist in some respects.
But I’m sorry, this somewhat ironic contrarian line of thinking (which I do appreciate) is false. HOOK is a turgid, lifeless, shrill, 100% miscalculating, self-important piece of complete, utter self-important bullshit waste.
“Jersey Girl” is an amazingly acceptable romantic comedy. I was pretty surprised by ho much I enjoyed it when I caught it on cable a few years back. Far from a masterpiece, but definitely not a POS either.

One of the few films I’ve never been able to finish watching.
And I sat through In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.

Who the hell decided to cast Robin Williams as Peter Pan?

How about a “When Bad Directors Make Bad Decisions” post, where we just include clips of every film Kevin Smith has ever made?

Truth be told, I think Chasing Amy is pretty good. But the double whammy of Jersey Girl and the god-awful Clerks 2 sealed the deal for me.
