$1 Extra For Blu-Ray Rentals From Netflix

Hmm.
To be honest, it doesn’t bother me too much considering Netflix is pretty much the only place around that I can rent Blu-Ray discs from, and a buck extra for superior picture and sound isn’t too steep.
But what does this say about the technology and its future? Is it not being adapted all that quickly? Is it being adapted at all? Do people really care? Obviously the economy can’t be helping. Will it be, as some people have posited, the Laserdisc of our time?

Yeah, I got this email from Netflix too. Doesn’t bother me that much, but there’s still something fishy about it. Like, when prices come down — which they already are — will they remove the fee? I have a feeling they won’t.
Meh, in 10 years we’ll be downloading everything anyway. Might as well enjoy the “warmth” of physical media while it lasts.

Yeah, you know, I absolutely agree that, I dunno, 85-95% of movie watching will be done by downloading in 10-15 years or whatever — which there’s nothing wrong with as long as the quality is high. But I think there’s maybe still a case to be made for the physical objects.
Like, where are people going to store all these movies? Optimum video and audio still takes up too much space doesn’t it? And does it run as smooth as a DVD?
Anyways, I don’t know if DVDs will ever completely disappear, but yeah, they’ll become massively less prominent.
