Create A Veidt Ad, Get Featured In The “Watchmen” Movie

Author: Stephen Gerding April 23rd, 2008 No Comments »

Aspiring film makers need to get in on this now. Create a commercial for Veidt Enterprises, upload it to Youtube and your creation just might land itself in a major motion picture.

Welcome to the WATCHMEN “Veidt Enterprises Advertising Contest.” Director Zack Snyder is offering you the opportunity to create “Veidt Enterprises” TV commercials that could end up in the feature film WATCHMEN, scheduled to be released in theaters on March 6, 2009. Remember, the movie is set in 1985, so TV commercials should be in full frame 4:3 aspect ratio (so it looks like standard TV, not widescreen) and they should be 15, 30 or 60 seconds in length. Visit http://youtube.com/watchmenmovie/ for more info.

Japanese Cartoon Contest

Author: AF Duncan July 18th, 2007 No Comments »

Looking to turn those mad cartooning skillz into cold, hard yen? This is pretty neat: The Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan’s largest newspapers, is looking for entries for their 29th International Cartoon Contest. Anyone can enter, but entries must be received by 9/21/07. The grand prize is 2 million yen, which is like $15K. Not bad!

This year’s theme for the contest is, oddly enough, “Teeth.” But I’ll let them explain the reasoning behind that particular choice:

The theme for the contest is “Teeth,” with the competition open to people from all backgrounds, ages and levels of experience. The theme may leave many people unsure about what to draw due to the seemingly unusual subject.

Teeth are necessary parts of the body for survival and people’s mouths can convey their feelings as eloquently as their eyes. Eyes also can show lies and pretense, but the mouth is more honest, clearly expressing people’s feelings and thoughts.

Teeth are hard and sharp, and sometimes can work as a weapon. But such strengths can be easily lost without proper care. Perhaps such strength and fragility of teeth can be used as a metaphor for contemporary society. The theme may be a challenging one.

Dear Japanese,

We thank you for always being completely f*&king weird.

Sincerely,
KFR

JetBlue Says: Fly Yellow With the Simpsons

Author: Stephen Gerding July 5th, 2007 No Comments »

Man, The Simpsons Movie is really vying to be a close second to the Transformers flick as far as generating public awareness and interest through advertising. Last week they shrinkwrapped something like a dozen 7-11s in Quik-E-Mart skins, and this week JetBlue is getting in on the fun with a Simpsonized website. They’re not just branding their site and planes with Homer either - they’ve got a full blown giveaway contest in full effect with red carpet premiere trips, sweet TVs and other cool junk, as well webcrack goodies like Mr Burns taking over JetBlue’s travelblog. Be warned - there’s non-mutable sound for the first few seconds you’re on their site, so workplace warnings are in effect.

Win A Transformers Themed Vespa

Author: Stephen Gerding June 13th, 2007 1 Comment »

vespa.jpgPretty simple, really - go to this link, fill out the form, receive even more unsolicited spam for an undetermined number of years and possibly win yourself a Vespa “like the one seen in Transformers.” There are certainly worse deals to be had, and it’s kind of nice to see something good come out of the Transformers franchise (sorta) absorbing the Go-Bots brand. Fucking Go-Bots - off-brand Transformers wannabes. Did anyone genuinely like them when they were kids, or were they simply something mom could buy you on the cheap to help you get over having to get a shot from the doctor?

In perhaps the biggest no-brainer tie in of the summer, Quiksilver is promoting a Silver Surfer movie tie in in stores and online right now, with the grand prize consisting of a silver body suit and Al Merrick-shaped Silver Surfer board just like in the photos below. I don’t know if the display is up in every Quiksilver store in the country, but this one is currently on display in the Downtown Disney store in Irvine, CA.

Food Network’s Cartoon Cake Challenge

Author: Stephen Gerding October 16th, 2006 1 Comment »

I specifically remember scoffing at the idea of a cable network devoted solely to food when I first heard about it over a decade ago, and now I’m pretty much addicted to several shows on the Food Network. Shows what I knew! At any rate, one of the shows that’s become pretty much required viewing in my household is the Food Network Challnge series. Always entertaining, even when the theme is something I couldn’t care less about. Last night’s show was extra cool, though, because the theme was famous cartoon characters.

Four different world class cake creators were competing, and while 3 of the resulting cakes were decent enough (Curious George, Popeye and Betty Boop), the Scooby Doo cake was freaking amazing. Created in just 7 hours (baking was taken care of ahead of time), I swear to god, I’ve never seen a cake as insane as this.

Here’s hoping someone at Food Network pitches a superhero themed- challenge for a future show.
