NYC’s First Kid’s Comic Con A Big Success

Author: Stephen Gerding May 1st, 2007 No Comments »

There’s not a whole lot in the way of details, but according to Publisher’s Weekly, the first annual Kid’s Comic Con in NYC last week was a big success. I first met the con organizer, Alex Simmons, nearly a decade ago, and while I haven’t kept in touch with him as closely as I’d have liked, I’m ecstatic to hear that his event went over so well.

Held on Saturday, April 28, at Bronx Community College, the daylong affair saw kids of all ages checking out a variety of comic books, meeting comics professionals and attending workshops on how to create their own comics.

Organizer Alex Simmons—educational outreach director at New York’s Museum for Comic and Cartoon Art and a comics scribe in his own right—said he was very pleased with how the day turned out. “Everything we did seemed really successful in a lot of ways and appreciated by the people who came,” he said.

The rest of the piece can be read here, and here’s another article on the con.

SDCC Exclusive Spider-Man 3 Mini Bust

Author: Stephen Gerding March 22nd, 2007 No Comments »

Sideshow Collectibles is well known for both the amazing quality of the items they produce as well as the vast array of exclusive ComicCon products. They’ve already announced a sweet looking Spider-Man 3 black suit mini bust for this summer’s San Diego show. Of course, if you happen to live in Japan you’ll have an early shot at it since SDCC Exclusive seems to be a more flexible term than it used to be - this bust will be available at a Japanese convention before SDCC hits in July.

Six Million Dollar Nerdebration

I had no idea there was a convention dedicated to the adventures of Col. Steve Austin and the uber sexy Jaime Sommers, but apparently there is. Bionicon 2.0 is coming, and if you’re in the Los Angeles area, it’s right around the corner from you. OK, so it’s really a general sci-fi convention, but come on, doesn’t the very thought of a three day celebration of all things bionic just kind of fill your heart with warmth?

Full press release after the jump.

Nerds Invade New York Again: NYCC 2007

NYCC-2007-003.jpg

Ah, New York Comic Con 2007. There was a lot stacked against you: the bitter, freezing cold; the seas of smelly humanity; and the debacle of NYCC 2006.

I’m pleased to say, however, after experiencing Days 1 and 2, that NYCC 2007 has been a tremendous improvement over last year (aside from the fact that the press badges Andrew and I received were both mislabeled “Kung Fu Radio”). There were tons and tons of people, yes, but the crowd was excited (not angry like last year’s) and was managed much more efficiently (not like last year’s). All in all, it was serious fun.

There were deals aplenty (the 40-50% off trades at select retailers was choice), and the lines to meet creators weren’t particularly mind numbing. (I’d like to personally thank the very cool Simone Bianchi, Kevin Eastman, and Whilce Portacio for being so generous with their time).

NYCC - Day 1

Author: Daniel Brooks February 23rd, 2007 No Comments »

Howdy folks — The Duncan and I hit up the 2nd annual NYCC today, and will be going back tomorrow. Expect our full report this weekend.

One thing I’m happy to say is that the show this year so far is a lot more well-organized and sane than it was last year. Though tomorrow, as they say, is another day.

2nd Annual New York City Comic Con This Weekend

Author: AF Duncan February 23rd, 2007 No Comments »

It doesn’t quite seem to have the drooling-in-anticipation hype of 2006, but this year’s New York Comic Con should still be pretty massive. And crowded. And hopefully full of awesome nerd stuff.

So I have to admit it’s kind of fun how the NYCC is already kind of the east coast’s version of San Diego…except without the unfailingly pleasant weather. Anyway, next week we’ll let you know how it all went. Wheee!

Greatest Spidey Statue Ever?

Author: Stephen Gerding July 28th, 2006 2 Comments »

OK, this is the last posting full of statues from this summer’s SDCC, but I had to run with it because the Spider-Man statue may be the greatest Spider-Man statue ever. As nice as it looks in the photo, it was 100 times nicer in person, with the blue part of the costume actually made of fabric. Seriously, Sideshow Collectibles may not be cheap, but they produce some sweet, sweet nerd swag. Iron Man, Punisher, Lobster Johnson, Hellboy and two other Spidey statues from another booth and manufacturer after the jump.
