International, Jolie Booberific “Beowulf” trailer

Author: Stephen Gerding August 2nd, 2007 No Comments »

OK, so they’re more fake than your typical Hollywood breasts, and they’re covered in some sort of mystical sludge, but this international version of the Beowulf trailer does give cyber-horndogs a quick glimpse at a motion captured Jolie’s perkiest assets. The rest of the trailer’s full of fire, violence and eerie looking Zemeckis CGI-ness.

It’s probably NSFW.

The show’s final season doesn’t kick off until November, but that didn’t stop the Sci Fi channel from releasing a new Battlestar Galactica trailer in July. Just in time for Comic-Con International. Hmm…

Holy the Crap Dept: D-War Trailer

Author: AF Duncan July 10th, 2007 5 Comments »

South Korea, the current kings of world cinema, are unleashing another incredible looking action flick upon an unsuspecting globe. Will D-War be as good as The Host? We shall see, but I don’t know if any movie can be as good as this trailer, that’s for damn sure. More importantly, what’s with the resurgence in old school monster movies lately?

Happy Trailers: 6/29/07

Wherein we quickly take a crack at some of the latest trailers…because they’re usually better than the final product, anyway.

I AM LEGEND
December 14, 2007

Andrew: Wow — how long has someone been trying to make this movie now? Like a decade and a half? Anyway, I’m a sucker for anything remotely apocalyptic set in New York City (I’m counting early 80s stuff like Escape from New York, The Warriors, Wolfen, etc), so I was already conditioned to dig this trailer. Matheson’s story is one that deserves an upgrade over the watchable Charlton Heston unclassic Omega Man, and even though this director’s other film (Constantine) was decidedly mediocre, there’s some awesomely startling imagery in here.

Steve: There was a point in my life when I pretty much immediately wrote off anything the Fresh Prince was involved in, but over the last 5-10 years, Will Smith has become quite the decent actor and I’ve enjoyed a number of his movies. He’s also become a pretty enjoyable action star, so I’m always interested in his popcorn movie choices. As Andrew says, the imagery in the trailer is pretty damn striking and powerful, and the trailer itself is put together really well, leaving me with the inkling that this flick a shot at being pretty decent with some actual substance. I’m really looking forward to it.

WALL-E
Summer 2008

Andrew: Figured Pixar would get around to a robot at some point. This is a cute little teaser, and it’s definitely piqued my interest. Where the hell is this character? What is he doing? What could Pixar have in store for us? Is this going to be some kind of insane space epic? Setting the film in the Pixar pantheon is kind of self-righteous/weird (but something all studios — especially Disney — used to do back in the old school days), and the character’s voice is kind of predictable Short Circuit annoying. Still, if I was a kid, I would be flipping. the. hell. out.

Steve: It’s amazing that a “trailer” with such little information could garner as much excitement for the movie it’s ostensibly promoting as this one has. Sure, the robot voice could get a bit cloying over the course of a 90-120 minute film, but you gotta trust Pixar to know what they’re doing. Plus, any animated robot flick they produce has to be immeasurably superior to the horrible Robin Williams’ Robots mess that Dreamworks subjected parents to just 2 years back.

MR. MAGORIUM’S WONDER EMPORIUM
Thanksgiving

Andrew: Ugh. Ok, great idea, let’s make an insipid, unimaginative Willy Wonka meets Beetlejuice! It’ll be zany! The kids love zany! How derivative of when-Tim Burton-was-good is this? They even use the Pee Wee music for chrissakes! I’d move my personal rating of this up a notch if everyone involved (besides jason Bateman) didn’t looked so pleased with themselves. Natalie Portman update: still charmless.

Steve: I disagree about Portman being charmless - frankly, she’s the only thing the trailer has going for it. Everyone and everything else is going through the motions so stiffly it’s painful, but Portman genuinely seems to be enjoying the material. What that says for her taste in scripts, I don’t know, but dammit she looks cute as a button with that haircut. Even more concerning is that movie studios would give a trailer to AOL as an exclusive when the video looks as crap as this. Yuck.

Halloween Website Launches, Trailer Available After The Kids Are In Bed

Author: Stephen Gerding June 12th, 2007 No Comments »

Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” website launched the other day, and while there’s not a whole lot there as of right now, if you sit through the flash opening during the daytime, you’ll get the following message along with the Halloween theme music and screaming women.

Interesting bit of marketing, remeniscent of the days when you wouldn’t see a trailer for a movie with “hell” in the title on TV before 9 PM. Now, if I can just remember to load the site back up this evening…

Happy Trailers

Author: AF Duncan May 29th, 2007 2 Comments »

As I’ve stated before on this here blog, I’m of the opinion that the American film industry (Hollywood and the independent arena) is currently in a bit of a creative crisis. By that I mean around 90%-95% of what gets made can best be described as mediocre crud.

And yet, there is one thing the film industry can still do right often enough: previews. In fact, it’s widely known that the trailer for a movie is usually better — or, at the very least, more interesting — than the movie itself. So, in what will hopefully be a sporadically recurring segment on Kung Fu Rodeo, The Steve Gerding and I are going to take a look at a few upcoming commercials for films that have piqued our, and probably your, interest.

JOHN RAMBO
Release Date: May 2008?

Watch the trailer here.

Duncan: Ok, the first half of this sequel’s “preview” (apparently it’s some kind of demo reel or something…?) offers the expected eye-rolling corn and promise of crap. And then, from out of nowhere, some seriously f*&ked up violence starts and it’s 100% go time. Is Sly Stallone reinventing himself as some kind of ultra-violent 70s drive-in hero? Because that would be amazing/borderline genius.

Gerding: First it’s “Rocky Balboa,” now it’s “John Rambo” - I half expect his next project to be an autobiopic titled “Sylvester Stallone,” but that’s neither here nor there. Fact of the matter is, Stallone’s experiencing a personal rennaissance these days. “Balboa” got him the critical acclaim that he set out for, and by the looks of things, John Rambo’s going to be a hit with anyone and everyone that’s just looking for serious movie violence. (Hint: that would be me!) Anyone else really wishing we’d have gotten Stallone as The Punisher now?

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
Release Date: December 2007

Watch the trailer here.

Duncan: I loved Philip Pullman’s insanely entertaining and inventive His Dark Materials trilogy — well, the first two books, anyway. This preview for the first film in the trilogy, The Golden Compass, looks pretty, but is surprisingly kind of lifeless. A lot of people seem to be in big rooms having meetings and interacting with CGI, which is getting more problematic by the movie.

Gerding: I’m looking forward to this anti-Narnia tale with some reservations. It’s such a dark story I’m still somewhat surprised it managed to sell as well as it did without some sort of ill-informed parent protest over the content, and I fail to see how it will manage to make it to the big screen with it’s teeth intact. That being said, the teaser poster alone has me somewhat excited to see the final product, and there’s just something inherently cool about talking polar bears wearing armor. (PS: even after starting it two years ago, I still haven’t managed to slog through the third book in the trilogy.)

FIDO
Release date: June 2007

Watch the trailer here.

Duncan: Another zombie comedy. Huh. This one’s set in some kind of warped Tim Burton/Peter Jackson/David Lynch idyllic 1950s-type small town environment where zombies are the “hired help.” A clever idea and technically a good trailer, I guess. It’s sharp and zippy. The film looks too obvious and into its own cleverness, though.

Gerding: I think the concept is a good one, and the trailer made me laugh a few times, but I expected more after hearing about how great this movie is during the last year or so.

THE BROTHERS SOLOMON
Release date: September 2007

Watch the trailer here.

Duncan: I want to like this. I really do. Will Arnett is one of the funniest people on the planet, and the SNL lady is a scream. It could be funny, but this preview is pretty weak. The premise looks startlingly thin.

Gerding: Thin, maybe, but dammit I like Farrelly Brothers flicks, and this is at least as meaty as any of their outings. Of course, FB movies either hit it out of the park or run a dribbler up the first base line, so the entire thing is going to hinge on Will and Will’s abilities to sustain the single joke. They’ll get bonus points if the brothers manage to remain clueless and not learn any valuable lessons by the end credits.

SUPERBAD
Release date: August 2007

Watch the trailer here.

Duncan: Ah, nerds tearing it up on their last night of high school, one of whom is played by George Michael from Arrested Development. Also, “Panama.” Awesome. I’m admittedly a sucker for Zany Night On the Town! comedies and I’m rooting for this all the way.

Gerding: There seem to be more and more of these types of slacker comedies being made since Napolean Dynamite surprised the hell out of everyone by being a hit, but Superbad looks like it’s set to be genuinely hilarious. I’d like to award bonus points for Panama as well - there’s nothing like hearing the classic songs of your youth in a trailer to get you pumped for a flick.
