NYC Subway Posters: The Remix

Author: AF Duncan May 5th, 2008 No Comments »

Some clever and inventive person or persons is running around switching up elements of advertising posters on the NYC subway. I’m not sure exactly how they’re doing it, but it’s neat-o.

I’ve seen the sort of random ripped collages people have been doing for a while (the posters now are essentially big plastic stickers stacked on top of one another), but nothing with structure and meaning like the ones in the link. I’ll be on the lookout from now on…

“Hulk” Looking Better And Better

Author: Stephen Gerding May 2nd, 2008 8 Comments »

After a fairly…mediocre teaser trailer kind of got the bad buzz going a month or so back, Marvel’s released a follow up trailer for “The Incredible Hulk” that pushes pretty much all the right buttons. For on thing, the CG looks slightly better, and I keep reminding myself that stuff that looks kinda fake on the small screen tends to look markedly better when projected onto the giant silver screen. Even more intriguing is the way the trailer hearkens back to the TV show - the best bits of the TV show - and the comic. Banner on the run looks like fun, and the quiet scene below manages more emotional impact in the split-second it shows in the trailer than the entirety of Ang Lee’s movie. To cap it all off, the old nerdgenes were pleasantly massaged when the trailer’s the score streamed seamlessly into the TV show’s classic theme song.

Disney China Makes Miley Cyrus Look Like A Mormon

Disney China underwear

For all the kerfluffle over Miley “Hanna Montana” Cyrus’ Vanity Fair spread, it’s downright wholesome compared to a campaign that’s popped up on Beijing billboards for Disney underwear. To be fair, the ads aren’t quite at that Victoria’s Secret level of titillating, but it’s still quite disconcerting and disturbing to see girls that look to be 12-13 posing in their skivvies. The billboard on the Slate site is probably the most mild, actually - TMZ has an entire photo shoot that has a grimy, over-airbrushed, near kiddie porn feel to it. Apparently Disney’s China licensing company simply runs their own game without clearing things with Disney corporate, and this is the end result. I have a feeling that freedom is about to go away pretty damn quick, especially with the Olympics coming up.

Han Solo Totally Got Leiaed

carrie_fisher.jpgIt’s a sad state of affairs that the most intereting piece of Star Wars news in the last few years is actually decades old - seems that Princess Leia totally did Han Solo back in the day.

She tells Justin Lee Collins in new C4 show Bring Back . . . Star Wars: “I went on the film saying ‘I’m going to have an affair’, like it was a kiwi, an exotic fruit — because I’d never had one!”

She adds: “I had a crush on Harrison for sure. Harrison is great fun when he’s had a few drinks.”

Shaking her head and saying: “I’m going to get in so much trouble,” she adds: “Once I left the room and came back and he was in the closet not wearing a lot of clothes.”

iTunes To Sell Movies On DVD Release Date

Author: Stephen Gerding May 2nd, 2008 2 Comments »

Things are starting to get a little more interesting - Apple’s managed to convince pretty much all the major studios to try offering their movies for sale through iTunes on the same day as the in-store DVD release. The $15 price is still a little high, but the convenience and lack of having to find space to file yet another DVD case away makes up for a little of the hassle, and I suppose the reality is that most new releases run at about the same level, albeit with bonus features. Might almost be time to start looking into an Apple TV…

Apple, which hopes to do for show business what it has done for digital music, is now selling new movie releases from major studios and independent film companies on the same day as their DVD releases, the company announced Thursday.

New releases available for purchase this week through Apple’s online iTunes store include “American Gangster” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Other catalog titles offered include “Juno,” “Cloverfield,” “I Am Legend” and “There Will Be Blood.”

“What this shows is that digital media is gaining momentum on traditional media,” observed Phil Leigh, president of research firm Inside Digital Media. “Ultimately, our televisions will be hooked to the Internet. We are going to pull up the iTunes page and get what we want on demand. Some of it will be free, some of it we will pay for.”

New releases will sell for $14.99, while most catalog offerings are priced at $9.99. The movies can be viewed on video iPods, iPhones and computers, as well as a widescreen TV connected to an Apple TV. People who purchase a movie through iTunes can play it as many times as they like, just like a DVD.

Another Round Of “Gotham Knight” Images

Warner Brothers is making sure that “Iron Man” doesn’t hog all of the glory and Google search term spots this weekend - here’s another 5 images from the upcoming “Gotham Knight” dvd, this time featuring Wade Wilson Floyd Lawton, aka Deadshot!

The interview with Alan Burnett continues after the jump below.

AWARD-WINNING WRITER ALAN BURNETT DISCUSSES “BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHT”

Alan Burnett has spent more consecutive years “in the Batcave” than anyone in animation history.

Not counting his stint on “Super Friends” in 1983, Burnett has constantly helped bring the Batman’s legacy to animation since 1991 - when he began scripting episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series,” the Emmy(R)-winning production widely considered a pivotal moment in American animation.

This summer, the latest animated venture into the Dark Knight’s mythos takes an altogether different approach than anything produced during Burnett’s 17-year association with the character. Burnett served as movie story editor and the writer of the anchoring segment of “Batman Gotham Knight,” the third in the ongoing series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies.

People, They Just Love “Iron Man”

Author: Stephen Gerding April 30th, 2008 No Comments »

As expected, Iron man’s been getting reviews for the movie as solid as reviews fanboys have been giving the trailers for the last year or so, with even the less glowing ones mentioning just how perfect Downey Jr. is in his role as Tony stark, and how awesome the armor is. However, Butterboom’s review in particular has a pretty badass spoiler. If you’ve managed to avoid any word about the movies to this point, suffice it to say that the theatrical version - not a preview copy - has hit the scene in Hong Kong, and at least one rumored scene made it into the final cut! If you’ve been following along at home, you’ve probably already got a hint as to what’s in the above link. If not, I think you’ll be wanting to stick around after the end credits along with the rest of nerd-dom.
