Pixar Comics…Finally…

Author: AF Duncan July 23rd, 2008 2 Comments »

And, somewhat less finally, Muppet comics…? Anyway, both are coming from publisher BOOM! Studios in the near future according to an interview with Mark Waid.

“Disney’s been very good about encouraging us to create new villains and new characters,” he said. “Nothing can be named yet, but yeah, we’re trying to draw from and help them build those universes.”

Huh? Is he talking about the same Disney?

Either way, this is kind of a coup for BOOM!, isn’t it? I would argue the supposed Pixar titles that are going to be comics — Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, Cars, and Wall-E — are some of the most lucrative properties around. If/when word gets out that these exist, it’ll be like printing moolah.

Rosario Dawson To Star In Webisodic Sc-Fi Series

Make of this trailer what you will - it’s a new web-only series called GEMINI DIVISION created to run on NBC.com for reasons I’m unclear on. I can’t tell if it’s in support of a full-on TV show, an upcoming movie or what, but it’s got a gen-yoo-wine movie star in Rosario Dawson, so it may be worth keeping an eye on. The trailer below, though, is fairly unimpressive.

That WATCHMEN Trailer Sure Can Sell Some Books

Author: Stephen Gerding July 22nd, 2008 1 Comment »

It seems that the Watchmen trailer that debuted last weekend is making news outside of Hollywood - apparently, on the strength of the trailer alone, sales of the consistently solid selling graphic novel have pretty much exploded. The easiest place to see this evidenced, as Andrew pointed out to me, is by taking a quick look at Amazon’s Top Sellers list. At 1:47 PM Pacific, this is what it looked like:

At the same time of the day, it’s sitting at #5 on the Barnes and Noble website. It’ll be reeeeal interesting to see if the obvious interest transfers from book sales to movie goers in a few months.

So, Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m especially interested in hearing from KFR readers their thoughts on the movie, especially since I was so freaking far off on my weekend box office predictions. Whooo!

I really, really don’t know what to make of this. I see Eisner in there, but I’m afraid it may be getting overwhelmed by Miller. I do know that I’ll be doing my level best to see this in the theaters, masterpiece or P.O.S.

Full trailer, after the jump.

The Watchmen Are Coming

The Watchmen's Rorschach

As eagle-eyed fanboys (and girls) noted last night, Apple.com has posted the highly anticipated “Watchmen” trailer scheduled to debut before “The Dark Knight” screenings this weekend. I’ve watched it a few times already and I have to admit - it’s got a good bit of awesome in it! I’m still not convinced that it’s going to be a good movie - Veitch just looks like a scrawny weirdo, they seem to have misunderstood the concept behind a pudgy, middle-aged Nightowl and Silk Spectre’s costume is…confusing - and I’m not sure how people unfamiliar with the source material will react to it.

However, chills of nerdglee coursed through my spine as I saw and recognized Gibbon’s panels popping up on the screen. Especially badass: Rorschach’s impromptu flamethrower, Veitch taking out the “assassin” in the lobby and the origin of Dr. Manhattan.

I totally recommend seeing it in HD.

Dark Knight Hype Reaches Out-Of-Control Proportions

Author: AF Duncan July 17th, 2008 20 Comments »

With people wildly predicting a $200m weekend, a $1 billion gross, Oscars, and giving it four/five star reviews all over the place, I think it’s safe to say that The Dark Knight is officially the most overhyped and already overrated film of the year, which has to be some kind of record. Kudos to the folks at Warner Brothers marketing. This was a very well played campaign. One of the best we’ve seen in a long time, actually. Some people over there deserve a raise/bonus/something or other for getting this event all up in our collective grills 24-7.

I legitimately hope this flick is good, but, let’s be honest, how could this possibly live up to people’s expectations at this point?

Seriously, after scouring just a tiny corner of the net, here are just a few of the things people are predicting The Dark Knight will accomplish — well, accomplish beyond making a bunch of people enormously rich:

  • cure cancer, AIDS, blindness, Alzheimer’s, and herpes
  • discover an alternative energy source
  • travel through time to assassinate baby Hitler
  • build the first terraforming colony on Mars
  • lead the human race towards spiritual nirvana
  • reverse the spin of the Earth and undo all natural disasters from the last decade
  • help underprivileged orphans skip to the front of the iPhone lines
  • raise Atlantis, solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, defeat the Yeti, and find Amelia Earheart
  • call back to Earth our extraterrestrial forefathers who will evolve the human race to the next step of existence
  • improve the original Coca-Cola recipe
  • erase the Star Wars prequels from our collective pop culture memory
The Dark Knight is here — WELCOME TO A BETTER WORLD.
