Michael Phelps = The New Richard Mulligan

Author: Stephen Gerding August 18th, 2008 No Comments »

I’m going to make the assumption that everyone’s heard of Michael Phelps by now. Apparently the world’s most popular super human is responsible for this being an insanely watched Olympics, with over 40 million people tuning in to see his final race this past Saturday. Again - 40 Million People! On a weekend! Without footballs and tailgating!!

Apparently, the last time NBC had this many folks stay home on a Saturday night to watch them, it was for an episode of “Empty Nest,” and they only had 31 million viewers for that. Chalk up one more record the dude’s smashed.

The Great LCD Blowout Of 2008 Is Coming

Author: Stephen Gerding August 11th, 2008 3 Comments »

Thinking about getting a new LCD TV or monitor this month? You may want to think againa nd wait just a few more months, according to the New York Times.

One of the year’s hottest seasons for buying new LCD TVs and desktop monitors is around the corner, mid-August through September, and analysts are nervous that people may not buy as many units as expected, which will send prices lower.

“Our recent channel checks show that the industry pendulum has swung into a ‘buyer’s market’ where customers are holding back orders,” said Jeffrey Su, an analyst at investment banking firm Merrill Lynch, in a recent report.

One problem facing the industry is a supply gut.

“Over-shipment of large-area LCD panels in (the second quarter) due to an overly optimistic outlook for 2008 was the main factor contributing to the rapid and significant panel price reductions seen in the panel supply chain beginning in June,” said DisplaySearch, in a report issued Monday.

I’ve been in the market for a new TV for a while, but never seem to be able to jump on the good deals when they come along. Here’s hoping that this winter I can finally get rid of my faux-HD tube and have a nice, sleek flat panel sitting in the living room to watch my Charlie Brown holiday specials on.

You can shove that iPhone and solar car up your ass, turkeys! An inventor from New Zealand has invented a working jetpack! About time is all everyone has to say.

On Tuesday, an inventor from New Zealand plans to unveil what he calls “the world’s first practical jetpack” at the EAA AirVenture, the gigantic annual air show here. The inventor, Glenn Martin, 48, who has spent 27 years developing the devices, said he hoped to begin selling them next year for $100,000 apiece.

“There is nothing that even comes close to the dream that the jetpack allows you to achieve,” said Robert J. Thompson, the director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. He called it “about the coolest desire left to mankind.”

Monster Parents Invade Japan

Author: Stephen Gerding June 9th, 2008 No Comments »

snowwhites.jpg

The ultimate in political correctness has arrived, and the result is rather sad/frightening. I sincerely hope it’s a trend that dies on the vine - parents in Japan were successful in convincing their childrens’ school that the entire cast of the school play’s production of Snow White should play…Snow White.

The stage was set, the lights went down and in a suburban Japanese primary school everyone prepared to enjoy a performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The only snag was that the entire cast was playing the part of Snow White.

For the audience of menacing mothers and feisty fathers, though, the sight of 25 Snow Whites, no dwarfs and no wicked witch was a triumph: a clear victory for Japan’s emerging new class of “Monster Parents”.

For they had taken on the system and won. After a relentless campaign of bullying, hectoring and nuisance phone calls, the monster parents had cowed the teachers into submission, forcing the school to admit to the injustice of selecting just one girl to play the title role.

Across Japan teachers are reporting an astonishing change in the character of parents, who, after decades of respectful silence, have become a super-aggressive army of complainers. The problem is that nobody can decide whether this is a good thing or not. Japan’s mass media has opted to demonise them: a lavish television drama starting next month will present the monster parents as a vile symptom of a society that has lost all respect for its traditions and decorum.

Sadly, it doesn’t stop there. While the US is full of litigious, reactionary parents, it seems that Japan’s really trying to one-up us. The article talks about parents trying to have teachers fired if their kids get int trouble, insisting that other children are suspended if they - even accidentally - hurt another child while playing, etc. Frankly, it sounds pretty scary.

Justice Sarah ‘Connor Announces “The Courts” Educational Video Game

Author: Dorothy Chin June 6th, 2008 No Comments »

Well, this is interesting. A prominent figure in the legal community working to use video games as a way to educate and inform people rather than trying to get them banned. What a novel idea!

The Our Courts project will have two parts, O’Connor said. The first is on online interactive civics program designed to be used by children from 7th to 9th grades either to supplement existing courses or as a distinct unit in the curriculum.

The program, developed with Georgetown University law school and Arizona State University, will be distributed free online.

“It will allow students to engage in real legal issues,” she said. Asked to give an example, she said one element would focus on a scenario of a school attempting to stop students wearing a T-shirt with a controversial slogan — a free speech issue designed to elicit argument about the 1st Amendment.

She said the web site at www.ourcourts.org/ should have some initial material by this September and be fully operational with interactive elements a year later.

The second part of the project will be for young people to use in their free time, O’Connor said, noting that studies showed children spend around 40 hours a week using media, including computers, television, videogames or music.

B&N Offers Free Same Day Delivery In Manhattan

Author: Stephen Gerding June 4th, 2008 No Comments »

It looks like Barnes and Noble is taking advantage of the recent decision by Amazon to start charging NY residents sales tax on their orders by playing up the New York City resident’s tendencies to have anything and everything possible delivered by bike. Free same day delivery is a pretty potent deal, and one that’s likely to seriously put a chink in the Amazon armor, even if it’s only on Manhattan Island for now. I bet Amazon’s already regretting bowing to NY politicos before they were legally forced to…
