Even better, the guy didn’t just throw up the final piece in a few different poses, though those pics are part of the appeal. No, he walks you through a step by step “Making Of…” presentation, starting with the first flat piece of metal with a few circles sketched out on it, to the machining of the parts, to the painting to the final piece. Of course, it’s in Russian, so you’ll have to either speak the language or have faith in an internet translator site in order to do more than drop your jaw in awe at the pictures.

So, they’re asking $43 for this admittedly awesome little USB drive that’s engineered to transform into Ravage for you. On the plus side, it looks absolutely great – there’s no mistaking that ferocious snarl anywhere. On the negative, it’s $43 for a measly 2 gig drive! Kellogg’s is giving away 1 gig Star Trek USBs for $8 and a clipped Proof of Purchase! I understand this has movable parts and all, but man – they could have sprung for some decent capacity for that price.

Even better – for an additional two bucks, you can upgrade to the Collector’s Grade and get one that’s certified C9 mint or better. SRSLY!!

CAROUSEL, A short film

Created entirely by Stink Digital, this new interactive campaign promotes Philips latest entrant into the television market, the CINEMA 21:9. Since the televisions 21:9 frame lends itself so readily to film, our friends at Tribal DDB, Amsterdam commissioned us to create a piece of filmed content that could hold its own with Hollywoods best. Director Adam Berg responded with an idea for an epic frozen moment cops and robbers shootout sequence that included clowns, explosions, a decimated hospital, and plenty of broken glass and bullet casings.

This epic film is the centrepiece of the project. On its own, it clocks in at a (totally coincidental) two minutes and 19 seconds, but Berg conceived it to work as an endless loop. Visitors to the microsite therefore have the option to spin through the films single take shot repeatedly, to stop on a specific frame, or to watch it at the preordained speed. The film also contains embedded hotspots, which, when triggered, transport the viewer seamlessly from the heavily posted film to a behind-the-scenes version of the same shot. This constant moving between two layers of reality proved one of the projects biggest and most ambitious production challenges. Other details of the online execution play off the cinematic theme; the microsites loader doubles as a credit sequence, while rich media takeover banners drive traffic to the site by teasing viewers with an original Carousel trailer. All aspects of the production, from the film shoot to web design and development, were conducted by Stink Digital.

For graphic designers like Zoë Korstvedt, now a Los Angeles creative director, the evolving Mac, with each added feature, was ripe with ah-ha moments.

To tinker with a piece, play with the text, “to visualize on your computer was just insane,” she said. “My colleagues and I wonder how we did it [their jobs] before.”

No wonder, then, that when Korstvedt, 44, married her first husband in 1989, she used half of their wedding money to buy her first home computer: a Mac SE/30, for which she forked over extra bucks for an upgrade to a whopping 8 megabytes of RAM. Nothing compared to the 12 gigs she now has. “I was styling,” she said with a laugh.

Jeremy Mehrle, 30, of the St. Louis, Missouri, area is too young to know a world without Macs. This MacAddict began hoarding and tinkering with tossed-out computers, and then he discovered eBay. Today, the motion graphics designer’s 1,400 square-foot basement is a museum to Apple computers, all-white and in gallery-style with about 80 fully-functioning machines on display.

“Some people think it’s really cool. … Others say ‘It’s Jeremy’s thing, it’s a little weird, whatever,’” he said. “I think if I had stacks everywhere, and you couldn’t move in my house, people would be worried.”

What’s Mehrle’s hobby, however, became a career for Dan Foust, 38, of Bloomington, Illinois. “Danapplemacman,” as he’s known on eBay, makes a living out of buying, and when necessary resuscitating, these computers before hawking them online to customers/collectors in places as far-flung as Italy and Australia.

So what would people pay for an original Macintosh?

“A complete boxed system?,” he said. “I can’t put a price on that.”
