How To Beat Home Video Games

Hey, how about another vintage video game junk post! In all seriousness, homes rocks the white boy fro pretty righteously.

Fun fact: Atari’s Pac-Man port was so phenomenally inferior to the actual arcade game that it was the beginning of the end for the 2600.

When Video Games Were Exotic

Not sure when this officially became KFR Gets All Old School Video Game Stylee On Yo Behind Week, but we just enjoyed this ye olde Atari commercial, supposedly shown in movie theaters in the early 80s, so damn much…

Accomplishments Of Video-Game Player Hyperbolized Beyond Belief

Author: AF Duncan August 12th, 2008 3 Comments »

I really love how this guy, who’s apparently become something of a web celebrity because of his mad Guitar Hero skillz, comes off as pretty much bemused and a bit befuddled at his newfound notoriety.

He really does seem to realize that: a) his 15 minutes is probably almost up already, and b) what he excels at is essentially a high-tech version of Simon. Good for you, dude.

Yet to the video game business Chris represents just the kind of player — the freakishly talented one-man spectacle — who could bring more revenue and legitimacy to the industry, and prove once and for all that video gaming is as much a mainstream American pastime as going to the movies or watching television.

The article goes on to quote from people who say (for about the, what, 8000th time now since the early 80s?) that video games are at the tipping point of becoming an accepted mainstream sport, and they compare this Chris guy to Tony Hawk. Sorry, but, no and definitely not.

Look, I love video games and I think they’ve made important and groundbreaking artistic and narrative leaps and bounds in the past couple decades. But I remain highly skeptical at their ability to be accepted as a popular spectator sport.

They might make enough money to exist as their own “sport” within a limited circle — like they pretty much already do. But as far as being televised with regularity for a wide audience, I sincerely doubt it.

Nintendo Wall Graphics

Author: AF Duncan August 7th, 2008 1 Comment »

I admit, the whole wall graphic trend is one of the niftier ones from the last few years. Even if it’s kind of played out for adults at this point, there’s still a lot of neat stuff you can find for kids. Or for big kids. Really, really big kids. And by really, really big kids, I mean geeks.

For example, these Nintendo wall graphics from the great Blik. So far they have sets for Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, and New Super Mario Bros. Awesome. You could either make your kid’s room the raddest ever, or, put them up somewhere else in the house/apartment and show the world that for some reason you’re having trouble completely shifting into boring-ass, anxiety-ridden adulthood.

The below image cribbed from Blik gives a great idea of the size of these things and what you can do with them:

Scrabulous Is Dead. Long Live Wordscraper!

Author: Stephen Gerding August 1st, 2008 No Comments »

Scrabulous may be dead and buried in the copyright infringement graveyard, but the same company that originally offered the working public a way to while away their days with some sort of distraction not on YouTube didn’t stay down for long. Meet Wordscraper.

Wordcraper!

After playing for just a minute, it’s obvious that they’ve been preparing for the inevitable Hasbro smackdown for a while. Wordscraper’s not that different from Scrabulous - you still get 7 letters at a time that you arrange on the board in order to form words, building off previous plays by yourself and your opponents. You can see the obvious cosmetic differences below, but the thing that really sets is above bing another Scrabble™ clone is the game board. All those letter and word multipliers can either be hand arranged by the player prior to the start of the game, or you can let the computer arrange it randomly for you. Not exactly bleeding edge technology, but it should - hopefully - be enough to prevent another Hasbro takedown. At least, corporate America’s army of 9 to 5ers would like to believe so.

Hey, Don’t You Mean Spr0n?

When Will Wright and Electronic Arts released the “Creature Creator” program a little while ago to create hype for the long-awaited upcoming video game Spore, they had to have known some people would be smartasses about it…didn’t they…?

Within 24 hours of the “Creature Creator’s” release, gamers had gone creature-crazy, designing millions of critters that were all thrown into a database and shown on a YouTube channel for the public to see.

But scrolling through the database — past the three-legged sea horse, past the seven-eyed wildebeest and the half-motorcycle-half-pig — revealed something many users didn’t expect. Buried among the more wholesome attempts were two-legged dancing testicles, a “giant breast monster” and a four-legged, “phallic fornication machine,” for starters.

And then there’s this little kernel of wisdom:

“Whether it’s modeling clay, dolls or crayons, a small number of people can be counted on to use it for something vulgar,” Lucy Bradshaw, “Spore’s” executive producer, told CNN.

Truer words were never spoken. And I mean that.

Feminists Are Back — This Time In Video Game Nerd Form

Author: AF Duncan July 30th, 2008 1 Comment »

A clever/funny sounding upcoming capture-the-flag squad game for the PS3 has some women gamers a bit miffed about some of the game’s content.

She’s plump, powerful and ready to cause more controversy than “SuperSize Me.”

She’s Fat Princess, the star of Sony’s upcoming video game of the same name. Debuting at last week’s E3 expo, the colorful Fat Princess is a capture-the-flag game with a twist: you can thwart capture attempts by locking the once-thin princess in a dungeon and stuffing her full of cake, thereby increasing her girth and making her harder for your enemies to haul back to home base.

Are you kidding me? I would say that this can be filed under “people taking things much too seriously.” This game looks and sounds amazing.

Gentlemen, behold:
