McCain/Palin Form Most Nerdtastic Ticket Evar

Author: Stephen Gerding September 9th, 2008 4 Comments »

If McCain would just do us all a favor and walk into a tree branch or something, this presidential campaign would officially be the most insane evar. It’s too bad he’s gone even nuttier than Saul and Palin’s more shithouse nuts than Roslin, because they’d be rolling in the scifi nerd votes otherwise.

Panda Dog!

This is pretty cool - a puppy was abandoned in Japan and has such severe eye infections that his new owner, a beautician, used a special dye to hide the discolored fur. One thing led to another, and….Panda Dog!

OJ Simpson Snack Chips

Author: Stephen Gerding August 27th, 2008 2 Comments »

This past weekend, I gathered up The Family and went down to J-Town on a day-trip, to see the sights, maybe grab some food and do a little shopping. Whilst in the local Mitsuwa supermarket, I noticed a bag of chips of some kind that featured a rather familiar likeness. Seems that, much like his animated cousin (6 times removed), OJ Simpson’s likeness has been appropriated by by an Asian company to hock their goods! I’m sorry I didn’t get a better photo, but for some reason Asian markets and stores are extremely sensitive about anyone taking photos of any type in them, so you kind of have to snap them surreptitiously, often on the fly.

Domokun On The Wheels Of Steel

Author: Stephen Gerding August 15th, 2008 No Comments »

Hard to believe that this Japanese import that was once merely a kitten-eating meme is now such a money-making juggernaut here in the states that he warrants a full-page ad in LICENSE Magazine. Frankly, I’m kind of shocked we don’t have a cartoon running here, yet.

You go, DJ Domu! Rock that shizzle!!

Jim Davis Gets It - “Garfield Minus Garfield” Lands Book Deal

Author: Stephen Gerding August 5th, 2008 2 Comments »

Ballantine, the publisher that’s been churning out those Garfield books since I was a kid ordering them from the school book program, is now going to be putting out a collection ofGarfield Minus Garfield” strips. Not only is this being done with Jim Davis’ blessing, but he’s actually promoting the project!

“Garfield Minus Garfield” is the February 2008-launched online strip that spoofs “Garfield” by showing the comic without its main cat character. So readers are treated to surreal, existential scenes of the Jon Arbuckle character talking to himself.

The full-color book will include the original and doctored “Garfield” strips together on the same page for comparison. Dublin, Ireland-based “Garfield Minus Garfield” creator Dan Walsh (GarfieldMinusGarfield.net) is writing the foreword.

Jim Davis, who started “Garfield” in June 1978, said of Walsh’s feature: “I think it’s an inspired thing to do. I want to thank Dan for enabling me to see another side of ‘Garfield.’ Some of the strips he chose were slappers: ‘Oh, I could have left that out.’ It would have been funnier.”

I’m sure I wasn’t alone in thinking that Davis and/or King Syndicate would eventually try to put the kibosh on Walsh’s project when I frst saw his redoctored strips. It’s really amazing, in a good way, to see Davis embrace the project, realizing that rather than detract from the Garfield brand, this actually enhances it in ways the original creator would likely never have seen.

Now I’m just waiting for an announcement of a “Nietzsche Family Circus” collection.

Scrabulous Is Dead. Long Live Wordscraper!

Author: Stephen Gerding August 1st, 2008 No Comments »

Scrabulous may be dead and buried in the copyright infringement graveyard, but the same company that originally offered the working public a way to while away their days with some sort of distraction not on YouTube didn’t stay down for long. Meet Wordscraper.

Wordcraper!

After playing for just a minute, it’s obvious that they’ve been preparing for the inevitable Hasbro smackdown for a while. Wordscraper’s not that different from Scrabulous - you still get 7 letters at a time that you arrange on the board in order to form words, building off previous plays by yourself and your opponents. You can see the obvious cosmetic differences below, but the thing that really sets is above bing another Scrabbleâ„¢ clone is the game board. All those letter and word multipliers can either be hand arranged by the player prior to the start of the game, or you can let the computer arrange it randomly for you. Not exactly bleeding edge technology, but it should - hopefully - be enough to prevent another Hasbro takedown. At least, corporate America’s army of 9 to 5ers would like to believe so.
