Oops

Tens of thousands of wrestling fans flocked to Wrestlemania for the experience of a lifetime, but at least 35 fans left with ice packs on their necks and three left in an ambulance.

“It felt like a whip. I have a welt on my neck,” said victim Barbara Vetere. “Like a baseball bat hit me. It was horrible. Horrible.”

A pyrotechnics malfunction sent fireworks and hot cables flying into crowded stands during the final wrestling match.

WWE Planning More Flicks, Fox Is Gonna Distribute Them

Author: Stephen Gerding February 26th, 2008 2 Comments »

Despite that fact that “The Marine” was a total dog and I’ve heard nothing good about Kane’s horror turn, the WWE is planning to forge forward with at least one theatrical release and as many as 4 direct to DVD movies a year. Yesterday it was announced that they’ve struck a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox, making these plans even more likely. I’m mildly stoked about this: the two movies I mentioned above aside, Steve Austin’s flick, “The Condemned,” is actually a hell of a fun way to spend an hour and a half, so there’s definite potential in future movies.

WWE is looking to spend around $20 million for theatrical releases while direct-to-DVD titles would be made for around $3 million to $5 million.

The wrestling org has had mixed success since forming its film division in 2002, releasing three pics, “See No Evil,” featuring Glen “Kane” Jacobs; “The Marine,” also with Cena; and “The Condemned,” with Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Fox distribbed “The Marine” in 2006, WWE’s biggest earner to date, that collected $22 million at the worldwide box office. Lionsgate handled the other two releases. While ticket sales were less than expected, the pics performed well on homevid, which has proved a lucrative revenue generator for the company.

American Gladiators Commercial

Author: Stephen Gerding December 13th, 2007 1 Comment »

So, is anyone else kinda stoked about the return of American Gladiators? I know I’ve posted about this in the past, but I kinda can’t wait to see people get their asses handed to them on national television. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this batch of gladiators looks pretty badass, what with all the “300″ style commercials they’ve been running. This one’s not all prettied up like that, though, featuring more actual show footage as well as the big orange goblin himself, Hulk Hogan, promoting the series.

R.I.P. Fabulous Moolah

Author: Stephen Gerding November 5th, 2007 No Comments »

It’s hard to believe that a mere 3-4 years ago, the Fabulous Moolah was still taking powerbombs from the top rope through tables. She passed away last Friday at the age of 84.

The Fabulous Moolah

Born Mary Lillian Ellison in 1923, she was dubbed the Fabulous Moolah after saying she wrestled “for the money … for the moolah.”

She was a longtime champion and the first woman inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame. Her autobiography, “The Fabulous Moolah: First Goddess of the Squared Circle,” was published in 2003.

Apparently this little video clip aired during Raw the other night. Might signify a reason to actually start watching wrestling on a regular basis again if the Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah’s actually coming back…

WWE Suspends Half Their Roster

Author: Stephen Gerding August 31st, 2007 1 Comment »

When you have to suspend ten of your wrestlers, times is bad. When a good chunk of that ten consists of some of your major stars, you may seriously want to rethink how you’re doing business. Some of the names on here are no surprise. Some are complete shockers. It’ll be interesting to see what ends up coming out. Sources are saying there are ten suspensions, but the list being bandied about has more names on it than that, so we’ll see what happens.

the List thus far:

- Ken “Mr. Kennedy” Anderson
- Mike “Simon Dean” Bucci
- Anthony “Santino Marella” Carelli
- Adam “Edge” Copeland
- Eddie “Umaga” Fatu
- Shoichi Funaki
- Chavo Guerrero
- Charles Haas, Jr.
- Shane “Gregory” Helms
- John “Johnny Nitro” (”John Morrison”) Hennigan
- Robert “Booker T” Huffman
- Darren “William Regal” Matthews
- Randy Orton
