Who Had “Anchorwoman” In The New Series Deadpool?

Author: Stephen Gerding August 24th, 2007 1 Comment »

AnchorwomanIn yet another example of how sex doesn’t always sell, Fox’s newest sitcom reality series, “Anchorwoman,” has been yanked from the schedule after airing a single episode. The show apparently featured an ex-Price is Right model/WWE Diva in the lead role, but nobody seemed to care or tune in, instantly cementing the show’s place as a question in an upcoming edition of Trivial Pursuit.

The debut of the reality show about Lauren Jones’ attempt to turn herself into a news anchor for a Texas TV station drew an estimated 2.7 million viewers Wednesday, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research.

That number is about a third of the viewership Fox attracted a week earlier with the finale of its popular “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Fans of the series will be able to watch the remaining episodes online at Fox’s site.

The Rabid Parallax?

Author: Stephen Gerding July 2nd, 2007 4 Comments »

Yes, yes, it’s probably far too soon for Chris Benoit jokes - as a longtime wrestling fan, I’m still kind of in shock and semi-denial about the way his life turned out - but dammit, funny is funny. Mix still-raw emotions over a popular celebrity’s death with the traditionally hi-strung nature of online Hal Jordan uberfans and you get a cocktail for politically incorrect hilarity. The best part is when the original poster defends his initial comments by claiming to be a nine year old kid and the others completely believe him and lecture the poor “child” on proper posting etiquette.

Thanks Tae!

EDIT: Well, crap - seems DC’s mods were taking the weekend off and came loaded for bear this morning - apparently any and every thread mentioning Benoit in any capacity has been deleted. Ah, well…there’s always Google’s cache!

EDIT 2: Thanks again to Tae - here’s another thread comparing Benoit and Hal Jordan, but they manage to bring Sue Dibny and Jean Loring into the mix as well!

The King Of Memphis Meets The Man Of Steel

Author: Stephen Gerding January 30th, 2007 2 Comments »

Hmm. I’ve seen some of The King’s paintings, and while he actually does seem to have some talent, I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be a lot of outside influence on this comic in order to guarantee it’s sellable. Still, this is a great idea on DC’s part, getting a totally non-superhero or comic oriented creator to work on a comic. I’d still love to see a Vertigo mini penned by Tarantino, or a Superman story written by Seinfeld though.

For Jerry “The King” Lawler, it’s not a dream, not an imaginary story…but it is what he calls “the fulfillment of a lifelong fantasy.” DC Comics has summoned The King to draw Superman for an upcoming project. Needless to say, Lawler—an accomplished artist, a huge comics fan and a lifelong Superman enthusiast—accepted the job faster than a speeding bullet. Check back with WWE.com next week when The King reveals the secret origins behind his super-art assignment, his artistic influences, and how he compares drawing the Man of Steel to WWE Superstars.

Andre The Giant Was The Greatest Drunk On Earth

Author: Stephen Gerding January 15th, 2007 No Comments »

There are some problems with the timelines (Andre didn’t come out of retirement and wrestle his last match at WrestleMania III, for instance), but this is still an impressive accounting of Andre the Giant’s drinking feats. It goes without saying that a man that weighs in the neighborhood of 500 pounds would be able to hold their alcohol better than the average boozer, but some of the stories are mind-bogglingly impressive. I especiallly enjoyed this one featuring a pre-Hulkamania Hulk Hogan.

As famous as Andre was in this country, he was even bigger in Japan. He spent a few months out of every year over there, where he was treated like a living god and pocketed five-figure payoffs for a single night’s work. That being said, Andre didn’t really like Japan. Everything was too small. Hotel beds were like bassinets and it was all but impossible for him to shower or go to the bathroom in their Lilliputian facilities. He was known to rip the door off his hotel bathroom and make use of the toilet by sitting sideways with his legs sticking out into the main room.

Getting from show to show presented its own problems. Japanese promoters preferred to transport the gaijin wrestlers by bus, vehicles which steadfastly refused to house giants. In order to placate their star import, promoters removed several rows of seats from the back of the bus, creating something of a private cabin for Andre, a place spacious enough for him to stretch out or catch a nap. Mostly, though, Andre used the space as a comfortable spot to do his drinking.

A very green rookie wrestler named Hulk Hogan toured Japan several times with Andre and witnessed the Giant’s alcohol consumption first hand. According to Hogan, Andre drank, at a minimum, a case of tall boys during each bus ride. When he finished a can Andre would belch, crush the can in his dinner-platter-sized hand, and bounce the empty off the back of Hogan’s head. Hogan learned to count each thunk, so he could anticipate when Andre was running low. Whenever the bus stopped, it was Hogan’s job to scamper off to the nearest store, buy as many cases of beer as he could carry, and make it back before the bus departed, a sight that never failed to make Andre roar his bassoon-like laugh.

Marvel Superheroes Invade WWE.com

Author: Stephen Gerding October 25th, 2006 2 Comments »

At this point, we’re all used to seeing sponsors take over all the ads on websites for various campaigns. Normally a movie or video game will buy up most or all of a site’s ads for a few weeks or so in order to promote their product, and maybe directly sponsor an article or two. Well, Activision’s taken it to the next level in their promotion of the Marvel: Ultmate Alliance game. They’ve not only bought the ad impressions out on WWE.com, but they’ve actually taken over the entire background of the site. Click the image below for a larger view, if you like.

WWE Marvel

I can totally understand doing this to stand out in a market where consumers are becoming harder and harder to advertise to. I do wonder, however, why the big comic book sites weren’t hit up with a similar offer.

Oh yeah - that’s K-Fed slapping John Cena across the face. Seems someone discovered there’s money to be made by having overgrown wrestlers kick the crap out of Mr. Spears on a semi-regular basis.

“The Marine” Trailer Online

Author: Stephen Gerding August 4th, 2006 2 Comments »

John Cena - The MarineI dunno - looks like a pretty fun action flick to me. But then again, I thought that Kane’s horror movie looked like fun and by all accounts, it was utter ass. Still, Cena’s like the white version of The Rock with charisma to spare, so I’d imagine he’ll be able to pull this one off in a fun Saturday afternoon sort of way.
