Clash, Ramones And Other Punk Memorablia On Christie’s Auction Block

Author: Stephen Gerding October 29th, 2008 No Comments »

On one hand, I’d love to get my hand on some sort of vintage Clash stuff or the Ramones concert poster mentioned in this article. On the other, seeing it all for sale through Christie’s Auction House is more than a little bit disturbing.

Memorabilia from some of punk rock’s biggest acts and seminal moments — including a scrawled flier for one of the Clash’s first shows and publicity photos signed by the Sex Pistols — is headed for a November 24 Christie’s auction.

The event, announced Tuesday, includes more than 120 records, photos and promotional pieces for such punk, garage rock and new wave legends as the Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, the Ramones, David Bowie, Blondie, the Cure and the Smiths.

The auction is Christie’s first to focus on punk mementos, signaling the collectible status of a brash, anti-authoritarian rock movement that largely thumbed its nose at posterity.

“We understand that tastes change, tastes mature,” said Christie’s pop-culture chief Simeon Lipman. “Ten years ago, punk memorabilia probably wouldn’t be something we’d be auctioning here. But now, people of a certain age have a certain ability to splurge on this material.”

Most Popular Oscars Ever Set For Next Year

Author: AF Duncan October 28th, 2008 1 Comment »

Considering 2008 is so far one of the most artistically flat and uninspiring years for American film in quite some time, is it any wonder that the studios are going to be pushing their blockbusters (a bunch of which were actually pretty good) when awards season rolls around?

Walt Disney is in. This week the studio will break new ground by starting a campaign that boldly offers its “Wall-E” as a contender for the best picture Oscar, an honor never yet won by an animated film.

Warner Brothers is in, too. That studio recently telegraphed plans for a multifront Oscar campaign for its Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight” by sending awards voters a query about their preferred format for promotional DVDs.

Not to be outdone, Paramount may join the party. Along with Marvel Enterprises, it is weighing an Oscar push for “Iron Man” and its lead actor, Robert Downey Jr., even while promoting Mr. Downey as best supporting actor for his role in the DreamWorks comedy hit “Tropic Thunder.”

Welcome to the pop Oscars.

Interesting way to release the single to the new Punisher movie - release a widget that has auto-play enabled and don’t let people posting it turn it off, thereby risking pissing off potential moviegoers and site visitors alike. Click the “more” link below if you want to listen to it.

“Actually, I am the gentlest and most unambitious of monarchs! My only desire is to make my people happy — and to further the cause of peace, and of brotherly love! I have been informed that my devoted subjects actually dance in the streets, at the merest mention of my name!”

“Spirit” Display On Display In Theaters

Came across this while walking through the mall over the weekend. The display, at least, is a pretty successful combination of Miller and Eisner’s respective styles. At least, I can see both of them evident in there…
